The Morrison Bar and Oyster on George Street in the city is bringing back their Crab Carnival for 2015 and the crab loving among you should take note. Running til the 24th of April, this 3 week celebration of all things crab will have you cracking shells and sucking on them crustaceans. It’s raining crabs at the Morrison! There’s a crab menu, cocktails, hermitcrab racing and like their oyster festival, a crab eating competition that’s all kinds of messy but oh so glorious.
Chili Mud Crabs ahoy.
Crab Eating Competition.
Like last year’s Oyster Fest Launch, chef Sean Connolly is engaged in the eating competition at the launch dinner. It’s a spectacle and a hoot.
There’s also the Crab race which will have you cheering on.
The Morrison Crab & Lettuce Tacos (with chardonnay vinaigrette, salmon caviar and fresh) is available on their main menu and it features on the Crab Carnival Menu.
Snow Crab Roll (3 for $18 ) Creme fraiche, lemon and coriander sits in a light pillowy bun. We loved these. They also have a soft shell crab slider (green goddess dressing) but you’ll see a soft shell crab burger at Crab Carnival.
Chilli Mud Crab (Market Price) is one of the mudcrab fans. It’s a ginormous mudcrab sitting in a sticky sweet and chilli sauce. Bibs, shell cracker and crab picker all essentials for diving in. It’s a meal in itself. Succulent crab feeding frenzy.
A really nice Blue Swimmer Crab and Corn Chowder (with saffron, potatoes and speck) is reminiscent of a lightly curried/laksa broth – the swimmer crab is tender and juicy and this was a favourite tonight. Nice to bite into the speck and potatoes also.
The amusing and impressive looking Crabby Mary is a Crab Carnival version of a Bloody Mary and comes with a large crab claw or leg. Its quite a bit drink. Nicely piquant and spicy and a bit of a meal in itself. Pickles provided a bit of a acid punch.
Going til the 24th of April, crab fanboy and girls should pay attention as Crab Carnival is a limited run carnival bound to entertain.
Key Dates for the fun public events:
Crab Races – April 2nd. April 16th. There’s a $5 sweep.
Crab Eating Competition. 7th April. Chef Sean Connolly and other chef friends will battle mud crab fans in a mud crab eating competition (*check for costs)
