The Gretzenmore or ‘Gretz’ is the newest smallbar along the Enmore Road stretch and its by the team behind Hartsyard. It’s small enough to be intimate but lit and finished just right to broadly appeal with interesting touches all over. Characteristics of The Gretz are nautical themes, denim clad stools, big thick ropes, staggered roof/floor tiles and mirrors on the one side of the bar. And yes, heaps of hanging lights and nary a wall of candle wax in sight too. The bartop/counters is hammered stainless steel and its all rather appealing and buzzy as its pulling in bar flys in for a cocktail and then some.
There’s 6 beers on tap here. Young Henry’s Features but you’re not really surprised are you?
We enquired with staff as to what used to sit where the Gretz is currently housed and were informed that it used to be the “waterhorse” small bar. You can see a gallery of what it looks like here. The reworked fitout is more in keeping with Hartsyard’s feel.
(L) I don’t want no Shrub – Beefeater, Averna, Peach Shrub. (R) Pencillin – Scotch Whisky, Honey, Ginger Syrup, Laphroaig Float
Coffee and Cigarettes – Johnny Walker Black, Mr Black, Antica Formula, Chocolate Bitters
A look at their cocktail menu.
The Smokin Daisy, Penicillin and their Coffee and Cigarettes were good drinking cocktails you’d be happy to spend time with. Coffee and Cigarettes was a potent cocktail you’d want to nurse.
A duo of Bar Snacks. Cloudy Bay Clam features in a “Clam Casino” $8. There’s also an Uni Toast $12 (which marks the 2nd time this week that we’ve eaten Uni – see: O bar). The former is juicy and delicious – bacon, bread crumbs, chili, parmesan, bacon and clam butter. The Uni Toast is more wonderous and eating this in a small bar setting made us think that Hartsyard/Gretz is truly trying to elevate what small bars are dishing up with nary an aranchini, popcorn bag or jaffle in sight. The bar menu is also seafood based and that jerky on the menu is Salmon Jerky.
We quite enjoyed The Gretz and we think between the popularity of Hartsyard (they’re 10K strong on instagram) and like all the more bespoke venues on Enmore (Osteria di Russo, Midnight Special) – there’s plenty of good drinking and eating to be had here.
