Located round the back laneways of Doublebay is the Parisian meets NYC bistro Mistelle. Mistelle is at once a classy yet¬†cosy intimate venue in which you’d find yourself soaking up the cooly cultured vibe inside. To the one side, Mistelle features a large bar out with an extensive wine collection.¬†Inside it is dim with subdued lighting, an appealing fitout with high volumes and dark grey coverings. It’s quietly elegant; monocromatic cool.

Outside, you can dine Al fresco and sit on the outdoor seating (shaded under large black outdoor brollies for arvo visits). Food here is share plate style although we were wont to share as the mains were compelling as stand alone dishes. Food At Mistele has a Mediterranean undercurrency and their knowledgable waitstaff will recommend wine pairings to go with.

An easy highlight their double-cooked gruyere souffle ($27), a nice savoury souffle topped with caviar from gourmetlife, blue swimmer crab meat and a delightful crab bisque that is punchy and delicious

Scallops with prosciutto comes in a pleasing looking raspberry jus and spinach puree. Scallops are perfectly cooked and very satisfying.

Duck Main

Lamb Main – A juicy lamb rump ($28) with thyme and rosemary, quinoa and confit tomato

The two mains we had were quite nicely done with both duck and lambs coming out just right. A shade pink and tender. We possibly would have loved the skin on the duck to be a tad more rendered but otherwise it was tasty. Mistelle described their menu as shared plates styled but you really probably wouldn’t want to be sharing. Certainly not these nor the desserts.

Of the two desserts (both very good); the salted caramel pecan tart is a real winner – deeply rich in that salted caramel flavour and endlessly moreish. Their french orange cake with lemon curd, meringue dish was light and fruity with a lightness from the the foams there; pretty as a picture too.

The cocktail list at Mistelle is geared towards the cocktail aficinados with classics featuring strongly. Martinis, Americanos, Summer Spritzes. They do the classics well here and its appeals to the refined classics drinker. Martini’s with Tasmania artisanal Gin (Poltergeist) were floral and aromatic. Served up olives or a slice of lemon zest. This is all terrific stuff.

Mistelle Double Bay offers plenty to the dinner looking for that sleek sexy Double Bay affair. With appealing food, great drinks on offer. It’s one we rather loved.
