Kate Gerwin, winner of Bols Around the World (BATW) 2014 was in Sydney last week and held a Masterclass at York Street’s hidden small bar The Barber Shop. Covering a range of topics that ranged from international cocktail and flavour trends, classic spirits driving cocktail innovation, the Importance of Flavor, Role of Female Bartenders to How to be the next bartender pioneer. The afternoon was a candid session with cocktails tastings and Kate regaling the room full of Sydney Bartenders about the competition and also about bar culture at her bar in Dakota, community and her role as the current BATW ambassador.
A look across the room during Kate’s talk. She shared statistics from America about female bartenders (30%); how women in the bar trade were seemingly happy bar-backing (serving) drinks and not going further with their careers. Girls with Bols (a mentor ship initiative for female bartenders) was her project during her year with Bols. She also encouraged everyone in the room to get into the BATW 2015 comp.
Gemima from Enmore’s The Midnight Special stepped up and made a cocktail during the masterclass
Bols has a rather extensive range of flavoured liquers.
A delicious “Genever Crusta“ $18 – Bols Genever, Triple Sec, Fresh Lemon Juice and Angostura Bitters. Its punchy and fresh and we rather liked this.
Drinking Bols Genever neat out of the sipping cups. Genever is described as the original juniper spirit.
Favourite of the Bar: Blood and Bandages – Morello Infused IIegal Mezcal, cherry Brandy, House Vermouth and Orange.
Barfiends should take note of the Crawley’s Imperial shakers pictured on the Coaster. There’s one at the barbershop and yes its a hoot to watch. Pop in with 3 friends and order a cocktail from the imperial shaker menu and watch the thing go. It’s a hoot. The Barbershop is the first in the world to get one.
