Merivale’s #JustDesserts is back for another round of sugary sensory overload. Held at the Establishment, Just Desserts showcases the sweet treats across venues from the Merivale Group: Lorraine’s Patisserie, Mr Wongs, Est, MsGs, Bistrode CBD, Functions & Events at Merivale and the Establishment Bar making espresso Martinis. Suprisingly, we skipped the booze and focused on smashing their desserts. If you’re reading, its over as this once off was held last week. Next year it is. $45 bucks nets you a token card with 6 on it. All desserts were 1 token. Espresso Maritini’s were 2.
They’ve put up a variety of delectable eating showcases on top of their stalls – that bit of effort to jazz up Establishment for the event and all that wonderful looking eats sitting there and you could not just go for it. It’s a solid A for effort though. Real showcases. Meringues, chocolates and more.
Mr Wong’s Mango pudding passionfruit granita mango pearls and tapioca easily wins the best dessert tonight. It’s so good we had this twice. There’s grapefuit on there and it added acid and bitterness which really completed the dessert. Deep Fried Ice cream and butterscotch sauce is also brilliant and sits in a richly savoury and slightly salty butterscotch.
Lorraine’s Patisserie had 3 desserts here – a passionfruit praline macaron with chocolate icecream verine, a chocolate dipped strawberry marshmallow with pink peppercorn jelly and a new york cheesecake. We were partial to the chocolate icecream and ice cream being a 2 in 1 and velvety smooth. New York Cheese Cake was supremely airly where you’d expect that atypical cheesecake denseness. It’s also quite filling and a large slab of it. Great value at the one token.
The MsGs stand here a Nutella and banana spring roll and a Pandan Tres Leches Cake. Like Mr Wongs, we had two of each as these were smashingly great. We rather like the abundance of summer berries n the Pandan Cake which helped to cut its fragant sweet quality. Nutella Spring Roll was as expected decadent and tasty.
Est’s had plenty of great things to eat. Their Vanilla mousse strawberries, rhubarb and hibiscus wafer was delightfully light and packed with flowers and granita that sat with some very light and delicious Vanilla Mousse. Their Chocolate Delice, Frozen Creme Anglaise, Rye Tuille was a performance showcase with Est bringing out the frozen creme anglaise as ordered. Always fun when the liquid Nitrogen is put to use.
Bistrode’s goat cheese and date pastry, fig and orange sauce – Probably the most adult tasting dessert tonight (alongside Est’s Delice) – this was peppery with that piquant Goat chees flavour when smushed together with that slightly burnt orange sauce. Quite sophisticated.
Functions and events’ Raspberry and Lychee Macaron combines fun fruity flavours and was a lot larger than the pic suggests. All perfectly risen and made.
Functions and events had a toasted marshmellow and passionfruit popsicle. This was the first thing we ordered and this was the 2nd one. An appealing smore-ish outside with ice passionfruit popsicle inside. Functions while not helmed by anyone recognisable, had some really nice treats today.
We also ran into Sydney’s instagram dessert sensation @katherine_sabbath and were suitably gobsmacked.
Just Desserts 2015 was good fun as we powered through and sustained ourselves on well, just desserts. A good way to hit a majority of Merivale’s desserts in the one spot. These chefs know how to make a bloody good dessert. Worth it.
