James Squire – An Edible Biography
On the evening of the 4th of February, Cell Block Theatre of Darlinghurst Goal was the appropriate setting to celebrate the life and times of Australia’s most famous convict turned brewer, Mr James Squire. The showcase held by the Brewers was a meticulously planned affair with an attention to detail, colorful fun showcase and a great dining setup. From the theatrical narrative of James Squires multi careered life to the grand setting with beautifully decorated tables. James Squire beers matched to an extraordinary edible biography (food catered by Aria Catering) – it all combined to tell the story behind one of Australian’s most renowned beer label.
After being greeted with some ingenious beer cocktails. The Stow Away India Pale ale with vermouth and lime juice; a tasty savory drop. Each course was introduced with a piece of theatre explaining a time in Mr Squires life which inspired the dish. From receiving 150 lashes (matched with 150 Lashes Pale Ale and fresh oysters, caviar and a pale ale granita) to ultimately his death in 1822, the paired eats with the James Squire beers worked well.
One beer of particular note is the new Swindler Summer Ale. Named after Mr Squires ability to con 1000 acres of prime Paramatta River real-estate in 1806, the beer is a gloriously easy drop to drink. Brewed with a specific blend of Calypso and the El Dorado hops, it has the refreshening notes of pears and melon. Very easy to drink to say the least.
And one cannot ignore the nights final delicacy, a Jack of Spades Porter, vodka and coffee liqueur cocktail. Possibly the greatest beer cocktail ever invented.
James Squires time on this earth was indeed a life less ordinary, and its fair to say an edible biography is a unique tribute to such a unique character. But of course the extraordinary beers he has inspired are possibly the ultimate tribute.
A look at some of the James Squire Range and drinks from the Edible Biography.
