The Erskineville Hotel / Erko recently had a smoker event and this was a showcase of the Yoder Smoker that they now have round the back in their light filled courtyard. The Event (previously written up here) was a real feast with plenty to eat and surprise salads that showed up and lots of beers. Incredibly it was only $47 so if you’re reading this and didn’t go, you missed out on a great lunch event. Plenty to eat, plenty to drink with a bit of masterclass on the art of American BBQ too.

From Jalapeno Poppers with Hot wang (what’s hot wang? you ask – its a speciality chicken rub that they used here), hanger steak slices with tatonka dust, some rather amazing cedar planked salmon – with a recipe from an American BBQgrandmaster, shortribs, spiced yoghurt lamb shoulders to smoked cheese (that tasty tasty bourbon infused apricots and ultra punchy pickled grapes wowed though). There was heaps to eat. The Hanger was an incredible dense meaty steak and one that is just coming to prominence and a crowd favourite today.

Surprise sides not on the menu making this $47 ticket even more banging were the smoked baked beans, apple slaw salad and a nice texany slaw. All these matched with the full range of Young Henrys beers – hop ale, natural lager, real ale, newtowner, cloudy cider (yum) and their limited release made for a real good time.

Sunshine, beers, American BBQ, a great engaged crowd that loves their food. Can’t be beat. If this comes around again, its a highly recommended. And in case you didn’t catch on, there’s BBQ to be had in the innerwest at the Erko. Good stuff!
