Cheeky Burger Popup Chippendale Hotel
We sort of called it in our brief Hotelclub interview saying how collaborations and popups are the new/most exciting food trend in 2015. As we enter into summer, the 2nd big sydney burger popup; Paddington’s Cheeky Burger Bar hits post code 2008:Chippendale and brings to the Chippendale Hotel their selection of burgers, snacks (deep fried pickles anyone?) and a wholly Americana bevvies and eats sorta venue.
The back of the Chippendale hotel has also been given a bit of a backyard blitz and has gone from pub ghetto to a bright light filled space – white table tops adding to the overall impression of zen like burgerfiefdom. Similar to cheeky Paddington, Local Street Artist (our mate) @Mike__Watts has street art styled pieces up on the walls here adding to the urban cool vibes. We gotta say, the space looks good and there’s plenty of seating around for more intimate groups to larger gatherings. On the evening of our visit; vice did a venue takeover and our mates at HAHA are staging a gig here soon. Burgers and goodtimes are on the menu.
The newly cheekycised Chippendale Hotel and the abundance of light and colour adds a lot of vibrancy to the space. You’ll also note the astroturfed styled paving outside and the use of corrugated metal panels (which is a design element also present in the Paddo store) and their red/white motif running in the space. The use of the colours Red White and Blue (Americaa) adds that burst of colour to the space.
Snacks: Mac and Cheese, Deep Fried Pickles, Yam Chips, Hot wings and a gooey mound of chilli cheese fries.
We didn’t opt for the fries that came with the burgers (you can get them for $3) and instead dove into their snacks menu. From a compelling large serve of chilli cheese fries with oozy melted cheese; which stood no chance as it got attacked like that scene in Birds at the table. Also good, their hot wings with its tangy sauce and morishness. Deep Fried Pickles were had a crunchy battered with heat wilted pickles; delicious. Mac and Cheese was a nice serve of an American classic with oodles of melted cheese and a nice cheese sauce and crunchy top.
For the vegetarian, Cheeky burger has a Mushroom Burger – it comes with tomato, Haloumi, a large field mushroom and a slice of capsicum. Cheeky Porker comes (as do all their burgers – comes in BT milkbuns) – The Cheeky Porker is a generous mound of slaw and juicy sauce covered pulled pork. We’re normally not big fans of PP but this was quite good. Nice mix of fresh and barbecue flavours and juicy moist pork.
Why did the burger lover go to Cheekys? To get to their cheeseburgers of course. Sandwiched between soft milkbuns are Cheeky’s cheeseburgers – its a fairly simply burger; one of the things you’ll quickly note is that this doesn’t even have ketchup in it. Beef, Cheese, Pickles, Milkbuns. So how is cheeky burgers at the Chippendale Hotel? With beef patties cooked medium; these burgers were juicy, cheesey and distinctively an American styled burger. We didn’t add bacon but it wouldn’t be amiss. You’ll note that they feature their standard, double and triple patty cheeseburger (that’s actually on the menu) and I think its safe to say the double patty is the sweetest spot here. As mentioned prior, you can get fries with your burger for an extra $3 as a combo.
For our money, these milkshakes were pretty great – we opted for salted caramel and chocolate ones and we’re happy to report that the salted caramel shake is suitably salty sweet and pretty much delivered on what you’d want. Its not one of them “milk” drinks which you do sometimes get elsewhere.
Cheeky Burger’s pop up is a huge step up in delicious burger eats for the Chippendale area and really livens up The Chippendale Hotel. Burgers, them snack selection and bevvies? We’ve got a feeling that once the neighbourhood catches on, this ain’t going to be no “pop up”.
