Barrio Chino up at Potts Point is one of Sydney’s premier Mexican Taqueria and Tequileria and restaurateurs Peter Lew and Nicole Galloway new venue Barrio Cellar is due to open its doors this 4th June. Barrio Cellar will bring to the CBD its first late night Tequila Bar and Eatery – unlike the small bars in the city – Barrio Cellar has an extensive food menu alongside its drinks and cocktail menu and its an exhilarating mix of the best in mezcal and tequila drinking. Barrio Cellar will also be trading til 3am so if you’re looking for a bar hotspot still trading in the CBD, this is it. Lock out does however kick in at 1.30am. Expect great drinking cocktails, great tunes, eats (Barrio Chino has our favourite burger in Sydney) and then some in a slickly crafted venue designed by the team behind Sydney’s The Butler/Seiobo. We’re thinking “its gonna be like the Mexican Frankies” once this gets going.
Add: Barrio Cellar is now open for lunch Wedneday to Fridays and will feature burritos on their lunch menu.
Look for the white cube and the pink neon doorway. Down the stairs is where you’ll find Barrio Cellar.
A L-shape space – Barrio Cellar is intimately lit, somewhat bunkery, moody and schmick with a large picutre of agave field near the private dining space. Gone are the club aesthes of Spice Cellar. There’s booths around the perimeter and seating across the venue and their kitchen is located on the far end. Their large bar runs across one side and there’s an array of the best tequilas and mezcals on here with a robust selection from Herradura, Arrette to Clase Azul.
A look at their menu: Botanas (snack), Tacos and Tortas. The food menu is simple enough and it’s a delicious one you’ll really enjoy. Cocktails celebrate the best in Mezcal and Tequilas with their delicious Tommys Magaritas making the jump over from Barrio Chino. Their corn is legit.
A Smokey Rose $19 Nuestra Soledad Matalan Mezcal, Sloe gin and lemon. A delicious well balance number, fruity lemony with a smokey finish.
Rhubarbarita $18 Agudo Reposado, licor 43, Rhubarb Puree, Agave Lemon and Mint. Tasty.
Tortas (L) Hongo $6 – a confit Portobello Mushroom with corn, grilled Mozzarella and Queso. (R) Carne: Meat $6- we opted for their Al Pastor Pork and both packed a punch with plenty of spices making for some delicious bites here.
Ceviche $12 Market Fish Tostada – its hard to convey scale in these pics but this was a larger tostada shell with plenty of ceviche on this. A real treat with fresh fish, a squeeze of lime and tangy flavours.
If you check out the Best Burgers post – we adore Barrio Chino’s burgers and here it’s no different. Except it’s now more readily accessible and now people will really be able to get into these. They’re delicious and we love them. Burguesa $16 – pickled jalapeno, chimmichurri mayo, chipotle mustard, cheese, red onion and yes they came with a generous mound of them hand cut fries. So good.
We popped back and had a double Burguesa. Truly fantastic and if you’re up for it – get the double. One of Sydney’s best burgers
Also at Barrio Cellar – this #secretmenu item. Grilled flank steak, gucamole, salsa on their handcut fries. Its a big serve. Delicious. Ask nicely for it.
Edit; Add: On wednesday they have $1 wings.
Check in and say hello to the barstaff. Barrio Cellar opens tomorrow from 4pm. It’s a winner.
