2042 Cafe & Deli

Located along king street  Newtown near the sando, is 2042 Cafe & Deli. Cleverly named eh. Read raves about what good food they do so we dropped in.

The fitout is nothing special. Cafe 2.0 It has a couple of couches out the front so the feeling is very much like eating in at someone’s living room if that’s your thing. Further inboards, you have standard wooden tables + chairs. That said, we were promptly seated and our server was friendly.

coffees + brunch.

scrambled eggs, spinach, radish, chorizo. eggs were nicely cooked and not goopy and gross like they do at Bills (sorry but I’m not a fan of Bill’s famous scrambled eggs). Bread was nicely toasted.

eggs benedict + salmon with hollandaise with a side of bacon. I like my bacon crisper less.. like this.

coffee was good. The cafe 2042 itself is quite big but indistinct; but the portion of food served wasn’t skint in portions and was decent enough to finish? Best breakfast spot? I think being to sit in the sun somewhere and eat a good brunch adds a lot of value to the experience.

Price wise it was about right and the service was good. But we’re talking about $20 all up for brunch.

2042, Cafe however sells their sides on their side; a trend that I don’t particularly like as I think cafes use it overcharge for product. 2-3 slices of bacon for $4?

The deli side of business is odd. I’d strongly recommend supporting the deli up the road if you want to support Newtown small businesses. They had to move off the main strip no doubt due to rising rent so I’d go to that instead. Deli on King. They sell a lot of yummy stuff in there.

I would come again. The breakfast couldn’t survive a 1:1 with the newtown big breakfast from El Bahsa though. That is a beast, both in portion and value and I can’t wait to review it properly.
