IconPark is kickstarter for the hospo industrial and an interesting one – every 3 months (called a season), 6 entrants battle it out for a taste test and an attempt to win their own restaurant for 3 months. The process for the public is to vote/back the resto concepts they’re keen on – no money is exchanged (ala kickstarter) til the winner is crowned and the backers for the winner than pays for the rewards/meals they’ve secured. Its all kinda exciting really.

So what’s BRITISH TRADING CO? This outfit/pitch by newtown couple, Allana and Matt. And Matt’s a┬áMichelin trained Chef. Its indian inspired with some interesting twists and we dig it. Indian/mod fusion/gin hall? There’s nothing like it no? Let’s run down the menu

Classic Beef Wellington – Served with a herb and mustard jus. Very nice with a pink middle to these mini wellingtons.

Palak Paneer – Housemade paneer cheese served with spinach gravy, wild mushrooms and garlic naan.

Vegetarian and beautiful dish. The gravy looked great on a plate.

Chicken Tikka Wings- Char-grilled yoghurt marinated chicken wings smothered in a rich tomato sauce, with crushed cashews and okra

Tender, not spicy and meltingly good chicken.

Goan Scotched Egg – Green Chilli and coconut pork mince wrapped around a slow cooked egg then crumbed, served with okra and watercress sambal.

Okra features again and the dish is spicy with good complex flavours

Pakora Gurnard Fillets – Chickpea battered Gurnard fillets with tomato tamarind chutney

very nicely cooked with a good relish

Saffron Fries -Triple cooked saffron fries with saffron salt

Okay, why has nobody done these before? Its a first and a must. With the fish, its a great eat.

Vegetable Bhajee – Eggplant and onion bhajee with minted mango chutney and coriander

Coated in a chickpea flour and deepfried, these were light, vegetarian canape styled bits.
We really like what British India is championing – the indian inspired outlook is one that is basically unheard of in the local bar/resto scene and the mod aus influences are also present. Have a look at their pitch on iconpark. They stand apart by not being readily avaiable as a concept elsewhere and that’s something we should champion. And not to mention the food’s pretty damn good. Michellin starred Chef? Yeah! You can also win a trip for 2 to India should they win. With the kickstarter “concept”, you don’t actually spend money unless you win, so this is the best $50 raffle you will ever enter – and of course, you’ll get a great meal too. Vote British India. We did.

and if you’re not convinced. Hit their stall at Taste of Sydney. Heh. We’re running a giveaway on the Jugernauts Facebook page.

I agree! Indian short eats/tapas/bar food is wonderful and seriously lacking in Sydney. I have always said if I were to start a restaurant (which I never will), this would be the concept. Glad someone is trying to do it. Good luck to these guys!
