Ume Burgers Surry Hills
What used to be a one hatted Japanese Restaurant ; Ume Restaurant by Kerby Craig has since transitioned to a quietly wonderful Japanese Burger joint. Ume Burgers are some of our favourites in Sydney, taking the whole Sydney burger train with its too-many me toos and flipping that on its head with its distinctively Japanese spin. Japanese Burgers, karage chicken, pickles and other sides makes up their menu and its a delight to report that revisiting now that the Ume Burger is a permanent fixture reminds us just how delicious these are. And how refreshing to the palate to eat something that’s familiar but different.
From their sides menu, some light bites. their Koji Karage and bright lightly acidic pickles. Looking deeper, Koji Fried Chicken is tasty and somewhat hard to describe – umami, with crispy coating and juicy morsels of fried chicken.
We’re here for burgers and the trio are a familiar revisit for Kerby’s burgers that made our Best Burgers in Sydney Guide. Each a perfect rendition of what a great burger should be. They’re not overtly hefty burgers but each a succinct bite that sharply focuses your tastebuds on these burgers. Ebi sits with a light, thinkly shaved fresh cabbage mound with just a touch of mayo. The prawn cutlet is crunchy, tender and delicious. Both Beef burgers features medium patties and differentiated with the sauces and ingredients. Ume’s signature burger has a salty umami beef mince sauce – beef on beef and its reminds us of MOS burgers if more premium. Somewhat sloppy, wholely umami flavours and tasty. Ume’s Bacon cheese burger features crispy well rendered bacon and what we think is a perfect bite. Savour these bites. This isn’t a monster burger ladened with cheese and gunk. Burgers from a 1 hatted chef.
Terrific burgers that challenges what Sydney’s used to. Different in the best way. Ume Burgers is set to open in Barangaroo and we expect great things and for more Sydneysiders to explore these Eastern Burgers.
